- Hello, just joined the forum. I will be working on a project for a

- daily to support business functions. First step will be to research document
- types, format, rate of generation per etc. Next...requirements definition and
- request for proposal to vendors who manufacture scanners and workstations.
- Ultimately, wwish to integrate scanned documents and mainframe generated

- We are in the development stages of our production management system. We are
- working closely with three of our co-ventures in assessing their needs for such
- a system. You are right in your assessment of the difficulty in managing a CD-I
- project. We are doing our best right now just to test out some of the design
- assumptions which came from reading the Greenbook. The hardware availability
- and reliability keeps us from moving at the pace we need towards a higher level

- pieces of an authoring systems as well as AIM. It is AIM, however which has the

- I agree that Philips needs to keep the industry as a whole informed as to the
- reality of their progress. CD-I can only succeed with the right software
- available at the launch date. AIM's mission is to see to it that general market
- consumer titles are available by the time commercial players are available.
- While the prospects for both the launch and the software being available within
- 2 years are good the market education must begin sooner (as soon as Philips

- Yes, the contest for the home optical market will be
- interesting to watch the next few years. I-CVD may take the early market, but
- I imagine that their marketing will focus on the gaming aspect of the medium
- since it is a Mattel product. CD-I will
- take a different market then I-CVD or even DVI.
- Some of the titles will be games, but most will
- be in the Edu-tainment / Travel / Hobby categories.
- To find out more call AIM in LA. The price for
- a CD-I player will be lower than your early estimate
- ($1499-$1299), but will still not approach the Mattel
- price for a few years ($499). It also won't be

- 20-30 CD-I titles to go with it.

- The products like Picture Power may address your needs, but you may be severely
- limited in storage unless you use a CDROM (digital), or a 12" Videodisc
- (analog). Also, storing the analog signals from a camera can be done directly
- to a 12" disc, and later retrieved without a digitizing board for display,
- thereby saving considerable cost. Also, some of the analog boards can interface
- DIRECTLY with programs like db3 and Clipper, using a pre-set 'trigger' ASCII

- Let me know, EP if you wish, what kind of interest you have, as this type of

-
- Salut! You say that your pictures "would be recorded w/a VCR camera". Do you
- have an image capture board of some kind? There are DBMS products that work
- with, for example, Truevision's TARGA board.
-
- Where would you store your images? Depending on what graphics adapter (e.g.
- EGA, Targa) you plan to use, and the number and sizes (full screen?) of the
- images you'd display, your hard disk space can disappear before you can say
- "CD-ROM". Speaking of CD-ROM, using CD-ROM or WORM drives would make it more
- practical to consider advanced graphics adapters like TARGA. That is.....if
- you need that kind of quality (and quantity!).
-
- As Lee Lammert suggested, you can go analog by recording your images on
- videodiscs. There they'll sit without taking up any computer storage. You
- won't need a digitizing board but you'll need a videodisc player and a second
- monitor. You'll also need a videodisc recorder ($10,000+) or pay someone else
- to make the videodiscs for you. I've recorded images on videodiscs and use
- dBASE III to command the player to display them once an appropriate database
- record is located.
-
- It sounds like you're in an experimental stage. Can you be more specific about
- what you want to do? Bonne chance!
-

- THANK YOU FOLKS, FOR ALL OF YOUR RECOMMENDATIONS. BUT IT SEEMS I WASN'T
- SPECIFIC ENOUGH. SO LET ME ELABORATE.

- I HAVE A CLIENT WHOM WOULD LIKE TO HAVE A PC (IBM OR MAC) ON THE MAIN FLOOR
- OF HIS JEWLERY STORE. CUSTOMERS COULS SEARCH THE DATA BASE ANS SEE THE PICTURES
- ON A SCREEN. COST MUST BE KEPT TO A MINIMUM
- (NATURALLY). I THINK COLOR IS A MUST. HE WANTS TO USE A WORM SYSTEM.
-
- I'M SURE SOME OF YOU HAVE GONE THRU THIS EXPERIENCE BEFORE. I HAVE SOME IDEA
- ON HOW TO GO ABOUT IT, BUT IF SOMEONE COULD EXPLAIN THE WHOLE SEQUENCE OF
- EVENTS, IT WOULD BE NICE. ANY BROCHURES OR RELATED MATERIALS CAN BE SENT TO:

- Scott,
-
- My background is primarily in the hardware end of things, so can't help you too
- much with the issues of filename restrictions, etc. (perhaps someone reading
- this will jump in and help). I didn't think that ISO was supported by Apple at
- this time?
-
- As far as search engines, you may want to contact Peter Black of Xyphias in
- Marina Del Rey (California). His company has developed a high-speed HyperCard
- based search engine that I hear is excellent. Please tell him I sent 'ya!

- Does anybody know the status of a company called Tetragon in Montreal? Until
- recently they were producing a product called the Rainbow Businessbase which
- listed all of the businesses in Canada. It also grouped the businesses by a
- standard industrial code system. I've been trying to call them at the number at
- directory assistance but I get no answer. Does anybody have information about
- Tetragon or perhaps about whoever may have taken over the product?

- Ah so. Then you've experienced a similar problem. That's a relief - yes, we
- know about the projected Maxtor fix shortly due, but we weren't sure that the
- problem wasn't just us.
-
- Thanks.

- Thanks for your message. I am glad to be in touch with someone at GROLIER.
- Since I live in Oslo, Norway, it is not convenient (too expensive) for me to
- call a US number. Can you give me a COMPUSERVE number that I can contact?
- Alternatively, can you give me some guidance on upgrade procedures? If these
- are too elaborate for a message, my address is Sondreveien 4, 0378 Oslo 3,
- Norway.
-
- $100 strikes me as a stiff price for an upgrade on a product which I bought for
- $189.
-
- I would be curious to know how many copies of the original disk have been sold.
